You have to hand it to James O’Keefe and his group of undercover journalists: Time and again they have caught Left-wing Democrats red-handed doing immoral, improper, and often illegal things.
And now it’s Robert “Beto” O’Rourke’s turn or, at least, some of his campaign staffers.
According to a series of newly posted videos, staffers for the Texas Democrat trying to unseat GOP Sen. Ted Cruz appear to be using campaign funds to provide assistance to migrants currently traveling in one or more caravans in Mexico on their way to the United States.
If, in fact, staffers have done what they appear to be claiming on video, that could amount to several violations of federal election laws.
Project Veritas said in an online post:
Project Veritas Action Fund has released undercover video from current Congressman and US Senate candidate Beto O’Rourke’s campaign. The video exposes how his campaign staff appear to be illegally using campaign resources to buy supplies and help transport Honduran aliens. This is the eighth undercover video report Project Veritas has released in a series revealing secrets and lies from political campaigns in 2018.
“Charity and helping your fellow man are things we applaud at Project Veritas,” said founder James O’Keefe. “The problem is you can’t break the law when you do it.”
The video shows O’Rourke campaign staffers Dominic Chacon and AnaPaula Themann talking about helping Honduran migrants, allegedly with campaign funds:
Chacon: “The Hondurans, yeah… I’m going to go get some food right now, like just some stuff to drop off…”
Themann: “How did they get through?”
Chacon: “Well I think they accepted them as like asylum-seekers… So, I’m going to get some groceries and some blankets…”
Themann: “Don’t ever repeat this and stuff but like if we just say that we’re buying food for a campaign event, like the Halloween events…”
Chacon: “That’s not a horrible idea, but I didn’t hear anything. Umm, we can wait until tomorrow for that.”
Themann: “Well that’s exactly the food we need. And I will just mark it as, I do have dozens of block walkers.
The pair appears to be using “pre-paid credit cards” and therefore it would, according to an attorney with Project Veritas who viewed the footage, be likely the pair violated Federal Election Commission rules. At one point Themann said that they can conceal their actions because some stores are not specific on receipts regarding what was purchased, such as food items.
To that, Chacon says, “I think we can use that with those [campaign pre-paid] cards to buy some food, all that s**t can be totally masked like, oh, we just wanted a healthy breakfast!”
Themann says that when going to distribute the food to the migrants she did not want to make it seem like staffers were from the O’Rourke campaign, adding, “I just hope nobody that’s the wrong person finds out about this” – an indication they knew what they were doing was wrong.
Chacon also discussed the possibility of using campaign vans to provide rides for the Honduran aliens. “We could probably get away with using the vans… Nobody needs to know,” adding, “For me, I can just ignore the rules and I’m like f**k it. I don’t mind breaking the rules and I can defend any position.”
When showed the footage, the Project Veritas attorney said spending campaign funds in that matter and “intentionally misreporting” the activity “violates the FEC’s rule against personal use and misreporting.”
In addition, “it violates Section 1001, making a false statement to the federal government,” the attorney said. “The FEC violations impose civil penalties, including fines of up to $10,000 or 200 percent of the funds involved.”
Violations of that same section amount to criminal activity and could also include “imprisonment of up to five years,” said the attorney.
